About Us: Our History
How did Acorn Tutoring come to be? Ah, we're glad you asked. Here is our story...
A Story of our Founding, by Ariel Mazel-Gee
It all began with Paul Gee's son who was so passionate about math that he worked as a math tutor for students around the bay area all throughout his high school years. In the meantime, Paul was tutoring his teenaged daughter--who had self-diagnosed herself as "allergic to math"--every day so that she could excel in her Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and AP Calculus courses.
Paul had just retired from his job of thirty years as a Computer Programmer at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and was looking for something meaningful to guide his next steps. After his son went off to college in 2005, his prior students were still calling the house to set up appointments (aaah yes, the days before cell phones...), and who should be there to field their calls, but Paul! He began taking on just a few students to test out the waters, but Berkeley Parents Network could not keep quiet about him! Paul quickly worked his way up to tutoring in a full-time capacity, and expanding the subjects he specialized in to meet the demands of his students.
In 2014, Paul moved his company headquarters to NextSpace, located in the heart of Downtown Berkeley. The deluge of students calling to schedule appointments exceeded the amount he could take on as one person. In order to best serve the needs of the community, Paul sought out the best tutors in the bay area, and recruited them to join the Acorn Team. Acorn is now a thriving educational organization that provides students with full-spectrum educational support, and it is growing by the day...
